Our Favorite Wineries in Nelson County, Virginia (and One We Can’t Wait to Try)

Nelson County has more wineries than most weekends need. That is part of the appeal, but it is also where people tend to overdo it. Keep it simple and you’ll have a blast. Two stops usually feels right. I start somewhere with a strong view, then move to a second place that offers a different pace. That contrast tends to make the day feel complete. The wineries here reward staying. A quick stop has a way of turning into something better if you let it. A third stop can work, especially if one is quicker, but it is rarely necessary. The day is better when it does not feel scheduled.

 Afton Mountain Vineyards

I really like starting here. It sets the tone in a way that is hard to miss. There is a bit of a Tuscan feel to it. The vines stretch out in front of you, and the mountains sit just behind them. It is easy to find a seat and stay there longer than expected. The sparkling is a great place to begin. The Albariño is clean and easy to come back to. The Tannat has more structure than most people expect and holds up well if you want something a little more serious.

It is a strong first stop because it gets everyone settled into the day.

Brent Manor Vineyards

Brent Manor feels different in a good way. I tend to come here when I want something quieter and a little more focused. They lean into Portuguese grapes, which gives the wines a distinct profile compared to other spots nearby.

They do have a cat. We are dog people, not cat people, but we do like this guy. He makes his way around the property and seems to understand exactly what is going on.

King Family Vineyards

King Family is worth the short drive to Crozet (a charming mountain town with an amazing Thai restaurant called Coconut Thai - the Tom Yum is so good). The space opens up completely. There is a polo field, wide lawns, and plenty of room to spread out. I really like it for a picnic. A bottle of wine, something simple to eat, and a place to sit without feeling crowded.

If you catch a Sunday polo match, it adds something extra. If not, the setting still carries the experience. Also they have great merchandise if you’re into that.

Valley Road Vineyards

Valley Road has a setting that stands out.  It sits a bit lower, tucked into the valley, so the light tends to hit the surrounding mountains in a softer way. It gives the whole place a slightly different feel from the ridge-top views nearby. The space works well for groups. There is a bit of an event feel to it, but it still stays relaxed. The people there are consistently welcoming, which makes it easy to stay a while.

Veritas Vineyard and Winery

Veritas may be the nicest overall winery in the area. It feels more refined, but still comfortable. The grounds are well kept, and the layout gives people space without losing the energy of the place. I like the picnic tables for groups. They make it easy to stay. The seasonal swing is also a nice touch. It changes throughout the year and tends to become a natural spot for photos, especially for families. It is a place that feels complete without feeling overdone. Try the sparkling wine!

Flying Fox Vineyard (the one we are excited to try)

Flying Fox looks like a place that fits well into this area. It has a strong look to it and feels a bit more independent than some of the larger wineries. I have not been yet, but it is high on my list. If anything, that is part of the appeal. There is always one more place worth discovering out here.

If you have been, I would be curious to hear what you thought.

A Quick Note on Timing

One thing that helps to know ahead of time: wineries here are not bars in Manhattan. Most close around 5 or 6. That tends to shape the day in a good way. It keeps things moving earlier and leaves the evening open for dinner, a fire, and a slower pace back at the house.

Final Thought

The wineries in Nelson County are close to each other, but they are not meant to be rushed. A couple of good stops, a bit of time, and the day tends to take care of itself.  Pick up a bottle or two and bring it back to AFTON PEAK. It usually tastes even better there. If you would rather not think about driving, a wine tour is easy to arrange through our concierge. And, somewhat surprisingly, Uber can work out here with a little planning.
