A Polo Match at King Family Vineyards (One of the Best Afternoons in Virginia Wine Country)
One of our favorite things to do when we stay at AFTON PEAK is spend an afternoon at King Family Vineyards for polo.
If you are spending a weekend in Nelson County or near Charlottesville, Virginia, it is one of the easiest ways to step into the rhythm of the area. Even if you have never watched a match before, it works.
Yes, You Can Bring a Picnic
One of the reasons polo here feels so relaxed is that it is meant to be enjoyed slowly.
Guests are welcome to bring their own food, chairs, and set up along the field. Some people go simple. Others lean into it with full spreads, wine, and everything that turns it into an afternoon.
It never feels overdone. Just comfortable.
Why Polo Works (Even If You Don’t Follow It)
Polo is easier to understand than it looks.
You do not need to know the rules to enjoy it. Horses moving at full speed, quick changes in direction, and moments where everything lines up perfectly. It holds your attention without asking much from you.
You watch, you talk, you look up when the play moves your way, and then settle back in again.
It fits the setting.
The Setting Does Most of the Work
The field sits open against the mountains.
Wide grass, clean lines, and the Blue Ridge rising in the background. There is enough space that it never feels crowded, even when it is busy. The light shifts across the field as the afternoon moves on, and the whole thing takes on a slower rhythm.
It is one of those places where you look up and realize how much time has passed.
The Shop Is Better Than You Expect
Before you leave, it is worth stopping into their shop. It is not an afterthought. It is one of the better places in the area to pick up something that actually feels like it belongs there. Horse-themed pieces, wine-related items, and Virginia staples that do not feel generic.
You end up finding something without trying to.
Final Thought
A polo match at King Family Vineyards is not about the sport alone.
It is about the setting, the pace, and the way the afternoon comes together without needing much structure. You bring what you need, settle in, and let it play out.
If you are staying at AFTON PEAK, it is an easy addition to the weekend and one that tends to stay with people.
