Staying at AFTON PEAK, Exploring Beyond Nelson County (The Best Day Trips Nearby)

One of the advantages of staying at AFTON PEAK is that you are not limited to Nelson County.

You have everything you need close by, but you are also positioned for some of the best day trips in Virginia. Within an hour or so, the landscape changes, the towns shift in character, and the experience opens up in ways that make a weekend feel much longer than it is.

If you feel like getting out for a few hours, these are the places we tend to point people.

Charlottesville and Monticello

Charlottesville is the easiest first step. It is about 25 minutes from AFTON PEAK, and it gives you access to restaurants, shops, and a bit more movement if you want it. You can walk the Downtown Mall, have lunch, and then head back without losing the day.

Just outside of town is Monticello, the home of Thomas Jefferson. The grounds are beautiful, the views stretch out over the surrounding hills, and the history is layered in a way that feels real rather than staged.

It is worth seeing at least once.

Wineries Beyond Nelson County

Nelson County gets most of the attention, but it is not the only place worth exploring. A short drive toward Charlottesville opens up additional wineries with a slightly different feel. King Family Vineyards is known for its polo matches and wide open setting. Barboursville Vineyards brings a more classic, established feel, with ruins and grounds that make it stand out.

These are good options if you want to expand beyond Route 151 without going too far.

Staunton, Virginia (A Favorite)

Staunton, Virginia is one of the more underrated towns in the region. It has a walkable downtown, historic architecture, and just enough going on to make it worth the drive. It feels preserved without being overly curated. If you go, plan dinner at Maude & the Bear. It is receiving national recognition. It is one of the better meals in the area, thoughtful without being heavy, and a place people tend to remember.

Staunton works well as a slower afternoon that turns into an evening.

Lynchburg and Roanoke

If you are willing to drive a bit further, both Lynchburg, Virginia and Roanoke, Virginia offer something different. Lynchburg has a quieter, historic feel, with a riverfront and a slower pace. Roanoke is a bit larger, with more energy, access to the Blue Ridge Parkway, and a broader mix of restaurants and outdoor access.

Neither needs a full plan. You go, walk a bit, find a place to eat, and let it unfold.

Appomattox Court House

For something more rooted in history, Appomattox Court House National Historical Park is about an hour and a half away.

This is where the Civil War effectively ended. The site is quiet, preserved, and easy to walk. It is not overwhelming. It gives you just enough to understand the weight of what happened there without turning it into a full-day commitment. It is a different kind of experience, but a meaningful one.

A Few Smaller Stops Worth Knowing

There are also smaller places that are easy to miss if you are not looking for them. Blue Ridge Tunnel offers a cooler, shaded walk through a restored rail tunnel and works well on a warm day.

Saunders Brothers Orchard is a good seasonal stop for fruit, cider, and a sense of the agricultural side of the area.

These are not full-day trips, but they fit easily into the edges of one.

Final Thought

Staying at AFTON PEAK does not limit what you can do.

It gives you a strong base.

You can stay in Nelson County and have a full weekend without leaving. Or you can step out for a few hours, explore a nearby town, and come back to something quieter at the end of the day.

That balance is part of what makes it work.
